GRAYSON STUDENT CENTER
BREWSTER ACADEMY
Architect: DSK | Dewing Schmid Kearns
Photographer: Anton Grassl
The Grayson Student Center began as a 1954 gymnasium but now serves as the heart of student culture at Brewster Academy. Panoramic views and controlled daylight suffuse diverse space types including the cafe, event space, classrooms, conference rooms, dance studio, mezzanine art gallery and huddle spaces. Even the adaptable black box theatre has the ability to be opened to the daylight and used as a classroom when it is not blacked out for performances.
Layered lighting strategies are used throughout the project to support multiuse spaces by providing unobtrusive general lighting in concert with targeted specialty lighting. Varied decorative luminaires support wayfinding and celebrate the character of the distinct programs that populate the student center. Multizone controls are fully integrated with energy savings systems, life safety systems, theatrical control systems and granular preset control for specialized functionality while still providing occupants with simple, intuitive controls for day to day use. The Grayson Student Center was awarded the 2022 K-12 Educational Facilities Design Awards Citation by the Boston Society of Architects.
